It is a medical procedure done to alleviate pain caused by herniated discs, spinal stenosis and other conditions. It reduces inflammation in the lower back, specifically the lumbar spine. It administers corticosteroids and a local anesthetic into the epidural – a tissue plane around the spinal cord and nerve roots in the lumbar region
The patient is instructed to lie face down on the examination table. The doctor will numb the skin with a local anesthetic, then proceed to inject corticosteroids (dexamethasone) with a thin needle into the epidural area. This injection may be guided by fluoroscopy in order to ensure precise and accurate placement. You may be monitored post-procedure to assure gradual pain relief.
